The best online music production courses in 2026 are Mix Elite’s 7-Day Music Producer Course for beginners and busy adults who want to finish their first song, Berklee Online or Full Sail for an accredited degree, Coursera for a lower-cost certificate made by Berklee, and Udemy for one-off budget courses. Mix Elite’s course costs $27, takes about 45 minutes a day, and ends with a pro reviewing your finished song.

You’ve probably got a folder of loops that never became songs, a job that eats your evenings, and a quiet worry that it’s too late to get good at this.

Most “best course” lists won’t help much, because they sort schools by degrees, mentors and pro-level mixing. So we sorted every school by the question you’re really asking: what can I finish with 45 minutes a night, without wasting money?

Updated October 2026. Mix Elite is our school, so we link every school’s own page, and we checked each price and feature there on October 6 and 7, 2026.

Each school gets one full entry under the need it fits best, and the other sections link back to it.

Best online music production courses for beginners and busy adults

Learning music production at 40, or at 30 or 55, with a full-time job is a different problem from learning at 19. You need short lessons, a clear order and a finished song at the end, not a program that eats every evening.

Time is the real limit. These picks fit around a job, and none of them asks for a music background.

Max’s rule for arranging is simple: “We want our arrangement to work as if we were taking someone by hand experiencing our song.”

Finishing is the skill most beginners never practise. Most loops never become songs. Our 7-Day Music Producer Course is built around it: one step of a real song each day, and your money back if you don’t finish a track you’re proud of.

A few others aim at a finished track too. 343 Labs ends its Ableton Beginner class with one, and on Studio.com, Andrew Huang’s class has you write and produce 3 songs.

Max’s free 4.5-hour FL Studio class is at the end of this page, and it follows the same order as our 7-Day course.

How much does an online music production course cost?

Prices run from free to the cost of a house deposit. As you climb the ladder, you mostly pay for more live teaching and more feedback on your own music.

Gear doesn’t have to add much. In his free class, Max says, “That’s all the necessary hardware you need to make music. Believe it or not, everything else is totally optional.” He means a computer and a pair of headphones.

Not sure how much time you’ll need? Here’s how long it takes to learn FL Studio.

Schools you may still see on older lists

Some lists still recommend schools that have closed or changed. Here’s what we found in October 2026:

  • Icon Collective: its website now opens on a blog whose newest post is from April 2025, with no programs listed. Futureproof’s and Hyperbits’ own 2026 lists both report that it closed in 2025.
  • Pyramind: pyramind.com now redirects to pyramindsound.com, where the learning offer is Pyramind Sound Skool, a community on Skool. Its site shows no certificate programs.
  • Dubspot: some lists call it closed, but dubspot.com now sells one self-paced drum programming class, with the first 2 lessons free and a free drum machine that runs in your browser.
  • Noiselab’s bootcamp: its page says the next enrollment is still to be decided, though the video library is open.

We re-check every school on this page each month and update the prices when they change.

How we picked these schools

Most lists sort schools by degree, mentoring or advanced mixing.

We wrote this one for an adult with a job, maybe a family, and about 45 minutes a night, who wants to finish one song they’re proud of. So we checked every school for five things:

  • A finished song. Does it walk you all the way to a complete track, or stop at loops and theory?
  • Feedback on your own track. Does a real person listen to your music and tell you what to fix?
  • Hours per week. Can you keep up on 45 minutes a night, or does it expect 10 to 25 hours a week?
  • Price. What you pay in total, and whether you pay once or every month.
  • Your DAW. A DAW (digital audio workstation) is the program you make music in, like FL Studio, Ableton Live or Logic Pro.

Every fact comes from the school’s own website, not from other review sites. Each school gets one full entry under the need it fits best.

Don’t let the software decide for you, either. Max puts it this way: “Each DAW is made out of the same elements that just basically look different.” And if you ever switch, he adds, “it’s just a matter of days.”

Judge the teaching yourself: watch a free lesson

The fairest test of any course is to watch the teacher before you pay. Max’s free beginner class on YouTube runs four and a half hours, and it had more than 1.5 million views in October 2026.

It follows the same order as the 7-Day course and covers Days 1 to 6: gear, FL Studio basics, chords and melodies, drums and arranging, mixing, vocals and mastering.

Day 7, releasing your song with a pro’s feedback on your track, is part of the paid course.

Max also says early on, “You don’t have to be able to play any instrument at all.” If you’ve put off music because you never learned piano, that’s the line to hear. Then follow our step-by-step guide to producing your first song.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too late to learn music production at 40?

No. You don’t need to play an instrument or read music, and a computer with headphones is enough gear to start. What matters is a clear order and a small, steady habit, like 45 minutes a night after work. Pick something built for short sessions that ends with a finished song, not a program that asks for 10 to 25 hours a week.

What is the best online FL Studio course for beginners?

For a beginner who wants a finished song, Mix Elite’s 7-Day Music Producer Course is taught in FL Studio, costs $27 once, and ends with a pro reviewing your track. If you’d rather have a long video library, Udemy’s FL Studio class by Tomas George and Ian Alexander runs about 25 hours. For free, start with Image-Line’s own Getting Started videos.

What is the best music production course under 50 dollars?

Mix Elite’s 7-Day Music Producer Course is $27, paid once, and a pro reviews your finished song on Day 7. If you’d rather pay monthly, Soundfly is $12 a month, Noiselab is $19 a month, and FaderPro was $11.99 a month when we checked, with notes on one track every 30 days.

What is the best online music production certificate?

For accredited college credit, Berklee Online’s Music Production Professional Certificate is five 12-week classes worth 15 credits, at $7,875 in tuition plus a $175 fee. For a lower-cost certificate without credit, Berklee’s Music Production Specialization on Coursera runs on a monthly subscription. Full Sail offers a full online Bachelor of Science instead.
